                        Visalia Seminar:

                       The Power Crisis &

What You Can Do To Cut Your Utility Bill

The Sierra Club's Mineral King Group will sponsor a seminar on what

consumers can do to lower their utility bills on Wednesday, August 1, from

7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Visalia Friends Meeting House, 17208 Ave. 296 in Visalia,

California.

The Sierra Club will host Paul Gipe, a world-renowned authority on

renewable energy. Gipe will explain how customers of Pacific Gas & Electric

Co. can qualify for a little-known but lucrative subsidy to install solar

cells and small windmills to generate some of their own power.

The seminar will emphasize how consumers can improve the efficiency of home

appliances and otherwise cut their consumption of electricity. Gipe will

discuss how consumers can save up 36 percent on their August electricity

bill by taking advantage of California's innovative 20/20 program.

Three vendors have agreed to participate in the program: North Fork's

Offline, and Sharpe Solar and Unlimited Energy from Bakersfield.

California's solar "buy-down" program offers substantial rebates to utility

customers who install solar cells or small wind turbines. The program pays

up to $4,500 per kilowatt or 50 percent of the installed cost, whichever is

less. Homeowners installing two kilowatts of solar cells, enough to cut the

average electric bill more than 50%, could receive $9,000 in rebates.

The Sierra Club is the nation's largest grass-roots environmental

organization. The Mineral King Group represents Sierra Club members in

Kings and Tulare counties.

Paul Gipe was named a pioneer in renewable energy by the World Renewable

Energy Congress in 1998.
